GUPPYFRIEND Washing Machine Filter

Reduces microplastic pollution during washing

incl. VAT plus shipping costs

With every wash of synthetic textiles, countless microplastic fibres make their way from the washing drum into our wastewater pipes. The journey often ends where microplastics have no business: in the environment. With our GUPPYFRIEND Washing Machine Filter, you can quickly and visibly stop the fibres before it's too late. We rely on established techniques that we constantly test together with laboratories and laundry departments of sports clubs to validate their effectiveness.

  5. Reinsert the cartridge and continue stopping microplastics

Instructions for use

Cleaning: Regular cleaning of the filter is essential. It is best to check after every wash whether cleaning is necessary.

Detergent: Please use an ecological detergent without microplastics.

Water pressure: In rare cases, an additional pump may be required to boost water pressure.

You wash what you wear. That is why every wash load is just as individual as the contents of our wardrobes. The amount of plastic fibers released and their composition always vary. So, which filter is the right one for you? For normal domestic use, you are well-equipped against microplastic discharge with the Starter Set in combination with the GUPPYFRIEND washing bag. For frequent washers, we recommend the Plus Set. By connecting two filter stages in sequence, you can filter microplastics even more efficiently. Learn more in our FAQs.

In principle: When buying clothes, prefer durable, natural materials and use a plastic-free detergent to care for your clothes and protect nature.

Please note that we have developed our washing machine filters for use in normal households. Our filters are not designed for washing heavily soiled textiles such as cleaning cloths and mops. With heavily soiled laundry, the cleaning effort for this type of filter would be very high. We offer individual solutions for this application. Please feel free to contact us if you are interested.

The fine-mesh fabric, originally used for drinking water filtration, is the most effective solution. You can therefore filter your wastewater very finely using the GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filter starter set. This is made possible by the extra-large filter drainage area of the round filter cartridge. By doing away with a "bypass," the water is forced to pass through the filter. Don't worry: if you ever forget to clean the filter in time, it will not lead to overflow. Your washing machine will automatically stop the wash cycle.

For particularly high effectiveness, we use the efficient operating principle of proven drinking water supply filters that have been used in private homes for decades. In this process, filter fabrics of varying fineness are used in succession to reliably keep the smallest suspended particles out of the drinking water.

The GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filter professional set therefore uses filter cartridges of varying fineness, which are used one after the other. This allows even the smallest microplastic particles to be filtered out.

However, even though the GUPPYFRIEND professional set allows no recognizable fibers through in our laboratory tests, it does not make sense to speak of a 100% retention rate. Minute amounts of broken-off microplastic fibers may have disintegrated into such small fragments that they are hardly detectable even under a microscope. This is precisely why it is important to reduce the use of synthetic textiles and pay attention to the high quality and durability of your clothing.

Yes. The GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filter can be installed wherever there is a washing machine. Whether in your home bathroom or in the large-scale laundry facility of a hotel or your sports club. You only need a little bit of space for the filter, and you can turn your washing machine into a true "greenwasher" in no time at all.

Both the starter set and the pro set are compatible with every type of washing machine.

Depending on the installation site and the pump capacity of the washing machine, it may be necessary in a few cases to slightly increase the back pressure for wastewater filtration. For this purpose, we recommend reliable pumps that can be connected upstream of the filter unit.

The starter set can retain particles larger than 150 µm.

The majority of fibers in washing machine wastewater are significantly longer than this. Due to the flexible nature of a fiber, it sticks to the filter instead of piercing through the fabric opening like a needle. Thus, our test trials show that even when using the starter set, hardly any fibers enter the wastewater.

The second cartridge in the pro set also retains fibers (>50µm) that have passed through the first filter due to their size or shape. In our tests, this corresponded to a share of up to 10% of the total amount.

Regarding the effectiveness and function of filters, we generally point out that the result is largely dependent on the specific application. For GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filters, this means: We test under practical conditions, i.e., with conventional washing machines, detergents, and laundry loads. Different textiles lead to different results.

One thing is certain: With the GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filters, washing bags, and detergent, you are perfectly equipped against microplastic pollution. If you also follow the rules of our washing guide and choose your clothing consciously, microplastics don't stand a chance.

Open the drain tap after every wash cycle to allow the water in the housing to drain out, and use the included fine mesh sieve for this purpose. You can dispose of the residue in your general household waste. Then, close the drain tap again. Done.

Cleaning the filter cartridge is different. It depends on the textiles and the composition of your laundry load, the degree of soiling, the choice of your detergent, and several other factors.

Through the transparent housing, you can see when cleaning is necessary. You should clean the filter insert with the included brush approximately every five washes. Ensure that the housing is tightly sealed after reinserting it.

Tip: With the GUPPYFRIEND washing bag, not only will your clothes last longer, but you will also reduce the cleaning intervals because you efficiently prevent microplastics from even entering the drum.

Yes. Specialist staff is not required. If you can assemble an IKEA cabinet, you can manage this too.

You should have a few tools ready: A cordless drill depending on the nature of the wall, a masonry/wood or metal drill bit (recommended: 6 mm diameter), a Phillips screwdriver, and a tape measure/ruler to mark the drill holes. A spirit level is also useful. You can also find all the information regarding this in our manual.

The GUPPYFRIEND washing machine filter makes the invisible visible. The transparent housing allows you to clearly see what you have protected nature from. After just a few washes, the grey synthetic fibre sludge is clearly visible on the filter cartridges. This allows you to recognise in good time when it is time to clean the filter cartridge. In principle, the frequency of cleaning depends on many factors, such as the composition of your textiles or how dirty they are.
